The Fledge Mentoring Programme
Change a Life in Just a Few Hours a Month
You don’t need previous mentoring experience to make a profound difference. We are looking for reliable, patient, and empathetic volunteers who can offer 2 to 4 hours a month to guide a young person recovering from housing instability or trauma. As a mentor, you will meet your mentee fortnightly in an approved public setting like a local café to help them map out practical goals. Whether it’s teaching budgeting skills, polishing a CV, or simply offering a non-judgemental ear, your consistent presence can help a young adult stand on their own two feet.
Purpose of the Role
As a Volunteer Mentor, you will provide consistent, supportive one-to-one mentoring to a young person living in or moving on from Fledge accommodation. Your role is to encourage, guide, and empower them as they work towards greater independence, stability, and wellbeing. Mentoring is based on building trust, listening without judgement, and helping each mentee identify and achieve goals that matter to them.
What You’ll Do
Volunteer mentors typically meet with their mentee fortnightly for around one hour, either at the Fledge offices or in an agreed public setting such as a café.
Typical mentoring activities may include:
- Building a positive and trusting relationship
- Listening and offering encouragement and support
- Helping mentees set realistic goals and track progress
- Supporting young people with budgeting and financial planning
- Encouraging independent living skills such as maintaining accommodation and managing bills
- Assisting with CV writing, job searches, applications, and volunteering opportunities
- Helping mentees explore education, training, or employment options
- Supporting communication with landlords, utilities, or other services where appropriate
- Agreeing actions between sessions and reviewing progress together
- Communicating between sessions through agreed channels, with safeguarding procedures in place
What Makes a Good Mentor?
We are looking for volunteers who are:
- Reliable and committed
- Good listeners
- Patient and understanding
- Non-judgemental
- Encouraging and positive
- Able to maintain appropriate boundaries
- Comfortable gently challenging and holding mentees accountable
- Interested in supporting young people to achieve independence
Time Commitment
- Approximately 2–4 hours per month
- Fortnightly mentoring meetings
- Commitment of at least 6–12 months preferred to allow relationships and trust to develop
If you are a patient, reliable listener who can maintain professional boundaries while offering genuine encouragement, we will give you all the resources, training, and backing you need to succeed.
